John Jacob Hollister
- Private
Enlisted in the Civil War a few weeks before his father, Samuel E. Hollister did.

Under the command of General Ben Butler and his 'Army of the James'
--Book entitled 'Army of Amateurs' by Edward G. Longacre about General Benjamin F. Butler and the Army of the James 1863-1865.

He enlisted on 12 August, 1862 in New York City, New York as a Private. He was 18 years old then. He was transferred to 'H' Company, 4th Prov'l Cavalry Regiment of New York. He was mustered out at City Point, Virginia on 29 November, 1865. and was transferred from Company 'H' to Company 'K'. (Source: Report of the Adjutant-General; Abbreviation NYRoster; Published by on 1894-1906).

4th NY Cavalry AKA First Regiment; German Cavalry; Dickel's Mounted Rifles; Lincoln Greens

Source: American Civil War Regiments shows the date of organization for the New York 4th Cavalry Regiment as 21 July, 1865, the muster date being 29 November, 1865.

On Ancestry.com, Civil War Pension indexes were made available. It shows that a John J. Hollister of California had served in the 'K' Company 1 New York Mounted Rifles. The date of filing was 22 November, 1890. The attorney was listed as 'Longshaw + Ballard'. The application number is 967377, the certificate number is 729531, State from which filed: California [says 'Cali']. Filed as an Invalid.

His original disability was Rheumatism.
His disability resulted in partial paralysis of mind and body, someone cared for him---his sister Margaret and his brother-in-law (Linwood Mitchell)---while in San Luis Obispo.
Info from the War Department said he enlisted in the Civil War on 11 or 12 August, 1862. He was first discharged 30 August, 1864 at Fortress Monroe?, then re-enlisted with same Company on 1 September, 1864. His final discharge was on 29 November, 1865 in Albany, New York. He applied for his pension on 22 November, 1890.

On 27 June, 1890 he was in Auburn, Placer County, California.
On his application, said '...from chronic Rheumatism and partial paralysis of muscles of arms...'. A doctor explained in a letter a lot of this was probably due to his time spent in water as an '...old miner...'.
